Malaysia’s Cabinet to Decide on Hologram Ruling on Quran
He said the views of ministers would be sought before a decision is made by the Cabinet.
"The enforcement has to be delayed until the Cabinet makes a decision that would be a win-win for both parties," he told reporters after meeting the Malaysian Quran Publishers Association (PQM), Thursday.
Under the new ruling which was decided in 2011, all publishers must buy the holograms from the ministry's Quranic Text Division at RM1 per sticker and bear additional costs of affixing the stickers on each copy of the Quran.
PQM has urged the government to drop the enforcement, arguing that it would push up Quran prices by up to 50 per cent.
Ahmad Zahid said the meeting with PQM enabled the ministry to hear the publishers' predicament and find ways to help them solve the problem of piracy that plagued Quran publishing.
"We also take into account the other ministries' failure to curb piracy despite enforcing the hologram ruling. So, we don't want Quran publishers to suffer the same fate," he said.
In welcoming the ministry's decision, PQM president Sabariah Abdullah said PQM was adamant that the enforcement should be abolished as the use of security hologram would not ensure piracy would be curtailed for good as even the hologram could be forged.
