News sources said Egypt has disinvited representatives from Turkey and Qatar from the country’s international Quran competition.

They quoted Muhammad Mukhtar Guma, Egypt’s Awqaf minister, as saying that the decision was made due to Ankara and Doha’s political stances against Egypt and the overthrow of former president Mohamed Morsi, Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported. Guma has also cited Turkey’s “insult to Al-Azhar Islamic center” as a reason behind the decision. Egypt’s international Holy Quran contest is planned to be held in Cairo on April 5-10. 40 Arab and Islamic countries have voiced readiness to send their representatives to the Quranic event. The annual competition, which is one of the most prestigious Quranic events in the Muslim world, was not held in the past two years due to the political turmoil in Egypt.
