The ministry’s officials say the decision aims to help reduce energy consumption in mosques, atlasinfo website reported.
The decision was made in a joint meeting of the Islamic affairs and Enegry ministries’ officials.
They said there should be a 40-percent decrease in consumption of energy in mosques by 2015.
In the first phase of the plan, the interior of some 1000 mosques will be painted green so that there will be fewer lights needed.
Using renewable sources of energy such as solar energy in places of worship is also on the ministry’s agenda.
Morocco’s Awqaf minister said how energy is used in mosques can become a model for other public places.
He said reducing energy consumption and using renewable energy not only is a positive step economically but also has a religious aspect as it prevents Israf (wastefulness).
