In a statement, Sheikh al-Tayeb warned against the killing of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar by the Buddhist extremists and stressed the need for confronting the anti-Muslim violence in the South East Asian country, iina.fr website reported.
He called on international organizations to fulfill their responsibility of protecting the religious and ethnic minority in Myanmar.
Al-Tayeb also criticized the Myanmar government’s indifference and inaction regarding the violence against Muslims.
He said what is going on in Myanmar against the Muslim minority runs counter to international laws and is a clear violation of human rights.
Hundreds of Rohingya Muslims have been killed and wounded in months of increased sectarian violence in the country. Thousands of others have been forced to flee their homes.
The Myanmar government has been repeatedly criticized by human rights groups for failing to protect the Muslims.
According to the UN, the Rohingya Muslims are one of the world’s most persecuted communities.
