Muslims are going to start month long grueling schedule of fasting beginning on the last day of June towards the end of July. For the entire month they will fast during the day from dawn to dusk avoiding eatable items, water or any other drink during the day and will also avoid sex.
They will also be spending longer time offering prayers.
Many Muslims will also be paying part of their annual income as charity to the poor or some charitable organizations.
Now many Muslims are going to feel a lot happy about the rigors they undertake during the month long fasting. Researchers at USC have concluded that fasting for 4 or 5 days causes the body to generate new immune cells and it is very good for health of those who actually do it.
The latest study says that fasting for several days at a stretch actually does a lot of good to human body. University of Southern California researchers concluded that skipping food every now and then for 2 to 4 days or even more actually put humans and mice to a better immune system. Valter Longo one of the authors of the report was quoted by Daily Beast as saying, “Any fasting is better than nothing,” he said, “[but] 4 to 5 days of fasting are necessary to maximize its effects, but they must be done under medical supervision and preferably in a clinic.”
Now many people can conclude as to why saints in old days had so great health and long lives. “…during each cycle of fasting, this depletion of white blood cells induces changes that trigger stem cell-based regeneration of new immune system cells…prolonged fasting reduced the enzyme PKA”, says the report.
