Events are set to be held across Greater Manchester to mark the religious holiday marking the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
Many of the celebrations will centre around Rusholme’s famous ‘Curry Mile’ - the traditional focus for Eid-al-Fitr celebrations.
And city centre stores are set to open for late night shopping for the first time in the run up to the religious festival.
Inspector Dave Nutsey said police have been working with the Rusholme Business Association, the Council of Mosques and Manchester council to ensure safe celebrations. Insp Nutsey said: “I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our Muslim community ‘Eid Mubarak’. Visitors coming to Manchester will be given a warm welcome.”
Greater Manchester Police are offering advice to people planning on visiting Rusholme.
Parking on streets in the surrounding area will be suspended between 9pm and 6am from Sunday through to Tuesday.
All restaurants along the Wilmslow Road corridor will remain open and car parks can be used behind the Shere Khan restaurant off Walmer Street, on Thurloe Street and Hathersage Road.
Insp Nutsey said: “Our officers will play their part to ensure the communities and those visiting are kept safe and that there is minimal traffic disruption to the area. There will be increased patrols in the surrounding areas to offer reassurance to our community.
“Officers will have a visible presence along the Wilmslow Road corridor.”
The wearing of new data-x-items of clothing is part of the Eid tradition and city centre stores are preparing to stay open later to allow people to buy gifts during the festival.
