Iyad Madani, head of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), asserted Tuesday that the so-called "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) militant group "harms Islam."

"None of the [ISIL's] acts or principles aligns with the tolerant teachings of Islam," Madani told reporters in Cairo following a meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.
He said his visit to Cairo would feature discussions with Egyptian officials ahead of an upcoming meeting of the OIC's executive committee devoted to the "danger the ISIL poses to Iraq and the region, as well as to Islam."
The meeting is tentatively slated for September 9 at OIC headquarters in Jeddah, Madani said.
Madani went on to say he was scheduled to meet Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi later on Tuesday.
ISIL has captured large swathes of Iraqi and Syrian territory following a large-scale attack in early June.
