Turkey’s Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) plans to launch an international Islamic university.

Mehmet Gormez, head of Diyanet, told reporters in the holy city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia, that a request has been sent to Turkey’s higher education ministry for permission to open the university, T24 website reported.
He added that the 29 Mayıs University in Istanbul is planned to be turned into an international Islamic university.
According to Gormez, it will be modeled after such universities in the Muslim world as Egypt’s al-Azhar.
He said the idea of opening the university came up with the aim of finding solutions that will put an end to violence and promote peace.
Gormez stressed that the factors behind the formation of terrorist groups like ISIL (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant), Boko Haram and al-Shabab should be investigated in order to combat violence in the Muslim world.
