A seminar titled “Martyr Sadr, Light of Serving Homeland” was held on Saturday, April 7, in the Iraqi province of Meysan.
It was organized by the Supreme Islamic Council of Iraq on the occasion of grand Ayatollah Seyyed Muhammad Baqer Sadr’s martyrdom anniversary.
A number of Iraqi scholars and thinkers as well as political officials took part in the day-long seminar.
Seyyed Muhammad Baqer Sadr was born in 1934 in the city of Kadhimain, Iraq. His father, Seyyed Heydar Sadr was a great Shia scholar and his mother was the daughter of Abdol-Hossein Al-e Yassin, a prominent scientific and religious figure.
After the Ba’ath Party took power in Iraq, Seyyed Muhammad Baqer Sadr was arrested four times by the regime.
The fourth time, he was taken into custody on April 8, 1980. He and his sister Bint-ul-Huda Sadr were then martyred at the order of Iraq’s former dictator Saddam Hussein.
