Nat’l Quran Competition in Mauritania

A national Quran competition kicked off in the Mauritanian capital of Nouakchott on Thursday, April 19, akhbarmauritania website reported.
Organized by Mauritania Radio at the grand mosque of Nouakchott, the competition features memorization, recitation and interpretation of the Quran.
116 contenders, including 5 women, compete at the event.
It is aimed at selecting top Quran memorizers and reciters to represent Mauritania in international Quran competitions including those held in Egypt, Iran, Morocco, Algeria, Iraq, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Kuwait, Tunisia and Libya.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, director of Mauritania’s Islamic Culture Department Sayyedi Muhammad Walad Al-Shuwaf said a special committee evaluates the qualities of the participants to choose the best ones for attending international Quranic events.
