This is according to Hojat-ol-Islam Ali Al-Ali, Kuwaiti researcher and director of Iran and Persian Gulf Studies Department at St Clements University, speaking to IQNA about the scientific miracle of the Quran.
The following are excerpts from the interview.
IQNA: How do you define Quran’s I’jaz (miracle)?
Hojat-ol-Islam Al-Ali: I’jaz is derived from the word Ajz, meaning that it is unique and that it is very difficult to bring something similar to it. Quran’s I’jaz has many different aspects and types, each of which entails various concepts.
IQNA: Since when did researchers start paying attention to the Quran’s miracles?
Hojat-ol-Islam Al-Ali: The issue of Quranic miracle was first mentioned during the lifetime of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). But at the time it mostly referred to the rhetorical aspects of the miracle of the Quran. Of course, this rhetorical aspect in itself is an extensive subject.
IQNA: Is the science of Quran’s scientific miracles a new field compared to other Islamic sciences?
Hojat-ol-Islam Al-Ali: I do not think so. While some believe I’jaz is a new science, I think it has existed for a long time.
IQNA: What do yopu think about recent studies about the Quran’s scientific miracles?
Hojat-ol-Islam Al-Ali: I think in recent years, considerable amount of research has been conducted in this field. For instance, the Al-Jowhari Quran Exegesis discusses scientific theories in associated with Quranic verses. Chairman of Egypt’s Committee of Scientific Miracle in the Quran Zaghloul El-Naggar has also conducted valuable research. There are also studies by Islamic institutes and organizations, but I believe these activities are just the beginning. They should develop and universities and scientific centers should contribute to these studies.
IQNA: Which Islamic country has been most successful in working on the scientific miracles of the Quran?
Hojat-ol-Islam Al-Ali: One successful country is the Islamic Republic of Iran. In Southeast Asia, Malaysia has done well. But more needs to be done with a comprehensive and systemic methodology.
IQNA: Have there been any studies on the subject in the West?
Hojat-ol-Islam Al-Ali: Yes, they have done research on scientific miracles of the Quran and some of their works have been translated into the languages of the Islamic world.
