2nd Volume of “Islam in Iran” Published
The second volume of the four-volume collection “Islam in Iran” authored by Henry Corbin has been translated by Reza Koohkan and published by Iran Wisdom and Philosophy Research Center.
According to the center’s website, Henry Corbin (1978-1903), French philosopher and theologian, published the results of his lifetime researches in a four-volume collection titled "En Islam Iranien: Aspects Spirituels et Philosophiques" (Iranian Islam: Spiritual and Philosophical Aspects) late in his life.
Introducing the collection, he said: “It includes 7 books; the first dedicated to the principles of Shia sect based on the Infallibles’ (AS) Hadiths and their reflection in the words of notable interpreters in Safavid Dynasty. It mainly discusses common principles of Imamology (on the knowledge of the Imam) in Shiism and Christianity.
“The second book (second volume) deals with the philosophical school of Shahab-al-Din Suhrawardi, comparing it with the medieval philosophy in West propagated by Robert Grosseteste.
“The third and fourth chapters in the third volume are respectively devoted to Ruzbihan Baqli Shirazi, Iranian Sufi master, and a number of outstanding metaphysical figures like Seyyed Heydar Amuli and Alla’odulah Semnani.
“The fourth volume of the collection includes three books which respectively deal with the Isfahan School, Shaykhism and the doctrine of Mahdism in Shia Islam.”
The collection has been frequently translated since its early publication but the translations have not been much successful due to the complications of French language, Corbin’s writing style, frequent use of Latin and Greek words and expressions and lots of references to ancient Iranian, Greek, Christian and Hermetic texts.
Iranian translator, Reza Koohkan hopes that the fluent and objective translation of the book can best present Corbin’s philosophical viewpoints concerning Iran, Shiism, Orientalism, mysticism and philosophy.
Koohkan is an academic board member of the Department of Religions and Mysticism in Iran Wisdom and Philosophy Research Center. He is currently working on the translation of the first book of the collection which is dedicated to 12-Imam Shiism.
