One civilian has been hurt in a mortar attack that hit a church in the Syrian capital city of Damascus, a report says.
The attack was carried out by ‘terrorists’ in the central district of Qassaa, the Arabic daily Al-Watan reported.
“Terrorists launched on Sunday a mortar round at a Roman Catholic church in Qassaa in Qishle street in Old Damascus, causing material damage and hurting a woman,” the report said.
Christians make up about five percent of the population in Syria, which has been experiencing unrest for nearly two years.
Many people, including large numbers of Syrian security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.
In an interview recently broadcast on German television, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said that the government did not start the conflict and that it was the foreign-sponsored militant groups who were killing Syrian people and destroying the country’s infrastructure.
Several international human rights organizations have also accused the militants of committing war crimes.
