Syria’s President Bashar Al-Assad said the principled stands of religious scholars like Allameh Muhammad Saeed Ramadhan Al-Bouti was the reason behind their assassination.
Speaking to Al-Wessal network, Al-Assad added that such stands have helped to foil the conspiracies that aim to create sedition in Syria.
He said that was why Allameh Al-Bouti and other scholars in Syria were assassinated.
The Syrian president also pointed to the hostile policy of Turkey against his country, saying that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has spoken no word of truth since the start of the crisis in Syria.
Prominent Muslim scholar Sheikh Mohammed Saeed Ramadan Al-Bouti was murdered along with 49 others at a mosque in the capital, Damascus, a few weeks ago.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of Syrian army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.
Several international human rights organizations have accused foreign-sponsored militants of committing war crimes.
