Hossein Mehdizadeh, along with Quran memorizers from Nigeria, Tajikistan, Somalia, Togo and Jordan were the first participants to enter the contest on Thursday, Al-Anba newspaper reported.
In the recitation category, representatives of Kuwait, Indonesia, Afghanistan, Oman, Gambia, and Tajikistan recited verses from the Holy Quran on the first day.
The international event, known as Kuwait International Award, formally kicked off in the city of Kuwait on Wednesday, in a ceremony attended by Kuwait’s Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak as well as a number of ministers, foreign ambassadors and Quranic activists.
The competition, which is underway in the categories of memorization of the entire Quran, Quran recitation, seven styles of recitation, and best plan for serving the Quran, will run until April 10.
Internationally acclaimed reciter Seyyed Mostafa Hosseini represents Iran in the recitation category of the contest.
