Featuring more than 90 scholars and researchers, the 12th convention of the annual fiqhi conference “The Evolution of the Fiqhi (Juristic) Sciences” opened on Saturday, April 6 in Muscat, Oman.
Sponsored by the Omani Religious Affairs Ministry, this year’s convention discusses the theme of “Fiqh of the Worldview and Living in the World”. The Conference proceedings continue until Tuesday, April 9th, 2013.
More than 60 papers are to be presented and discussed under the current theme, and will cover many aspects such as the conceptual framework, coexistence in Islamic legislative discourse, approaches of fiqhi schools towards living with the other, international agreements, state and citizenship, and relations between Muslim and non-Muslims.
Prominent scholars attending the conference include Sheikh Shawqi Abdul-Karim, the grand mufti of Egypt, Dr. Mustafa Cerić, the grand Bosnian mufti, Dr. Nourredine al-Khademi, the Tunisia’s Religious Affairs Minister, Dr. Wahba Al-Zuhaili and other eminent scholars from different parts of the world.
Among the topics discussed in the previous sessions are Fiqh Theories and Systems, Islam and Future and Shari`ah codification.
In his opening speech, Sheikh Ahmad ibn Hamad Al-Khalili, the Mufti of Oman, highlighted the importance of the conference.
“With continuous efforts of scholars and researchers of Islam, we would be able to reveal the greatness of Islamic fiqh (Jurisprudence) and protect it as the legacy and pride of this Ummah,” said Sheikh Al-Khalili.
In his speech, Dr. Ali Jumu`ah, the former grand mufti of Egypt, traced the roots of Islamic co-existence in the Qur’an and the morals of the Prophet (PBUH) and called Muslims to be inspired by Allah’s Mercy when they deal with others.
“Islam has been misunderstood by some people because of their ignorance of the fiqh of coexistence and lack of concrete understanding of fiqh of Jihad.” Said Ismail Abdel- Halim, President of Middle Eastern Muslim Graduate Association, Malysia.
Among the topics to be addressed in the conference is the Islamic position towards international agreements and documents, especially those related to human rights. Given the big controversy stirred by the latest UN document about violence against women, it is expected to get special attention and discussions in the conference.
In this regard Dr. Mustafa Cerić, the grand Bosnian mufti, affirmed the role played by Islam since its early days to rescue women from the bondage of abuse and harassment. So, Muslims’ family life should not be dictated by others as Muslims have their own guiding rules.
The concerns of Muslim minorities around globe are expected to gain special interest too, especially with the deteriorating situation of Muslims in Maynamar who are facing violent attacks from the Buddhist majority in the country. Dr. Cerić suggested that a statement should be addressed by the conference to the UN to condemn the massacres.
Scholars from Benin, Zanzibar, Tanzania, Tunisia, Libya, Morocco, Malaysia, Indonesia and America are among the delegates attending the four-day conference.
