“Najaf: Scientific Capital of Iraq” Plan Launched

The “Najaf: Scientific Capital of Iraq” Plan was launched in a ceremony in Iraq on Tuesday, April 9.
According to Buratha news agency, head of Iraq’s Supreme Islamic Council Sayyed Ammar Al-Hakim, who was present at the ceremony, called for allocation of an annual $500 million budget to the plan to support it.
He described Najaf as the city of Islamic knowledge and thought and said, “With such a background, we should introduce Najaf as the scientific capital of Iraq.”
Al-Hakim also called for formation of a supreme council for the plan, made up of scholars, intellectuals, clerics and government representatives.
He added that the plan includes a program to establish a scientific city named Imam Ali (AS), as well as one to set up a medical city and a publication center.
Elsewhere in his remarks, head of Iraq’s Supreme Islamic Council recalled the important role of the country’s source of emulation and said grand Ayatollah Sistani is a model for promoting peace in Iraq.
Najaf is a holy city in southern Iraq, where the shrine of Imam Ali (AS) is located. Its seminary has been a center of knowledge and scholarly activities for over a thousand years.
