Grand Ayatollah Calls for Muslim Scholars’ Vigilance
Grand Ayatollah Nasser Makarem-Shirazi said Muslim scholars should be vigilant and see the hands of Islam’s enemies in what is happening in Syria.
Speaking in a meeting with Syria’s Ambassador to Iran Adnan Mahmoud, the grand source of emulation said the enemies are now seeking to topple the government of Syria and in the next stage will try to split up the country.
“Unlike the wars against Iraq and Afghanistan, this time the West and the United States have invaded Islam indirectly by pitting Muslims against one another,” he said.
The senior cleric stated that the enemies want to turn Muslims’ enmity toward Israel into an enmity with one another.
“The enemies want to topple the government of Syria first and then take to Hezbollah, Iraq and Iran. But rest assured they will fail in carrying out their plot.”
He criticized the Qatar-based scholar Yusuf Al- Qaradawi as well as the governments of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey for their stand vis-à-vis the developments in Syria, saying that the three countries have waged a proxy war against the people and government of Syria and against the resistance movement.
Grand Ayatollah Makarem-Shirazi stressed urged those is Syria who have fallen trap to the enemies’ scheme and taken up arms against the people and government of their country to lay down their arms and choose their destiny through the ballot box.
The Syrian ambassador in the meeting briefed the grand Ayatollah on the developments in Syria and the region and said one of the main objectives of the enemies is to defeat the axis of resistance and weaken Iran.
He said on early days of the unrest in Syria, a US undersecretary of State suggested that if Bashar Al-Assad abandons his support for Hezbollah and Iran, the situation will calm, but Assad has continued on his path because he believes in it.
Adnan Mahmoud praised insightful Shia scholars, especially Iranian sources of emulation who have always supported the axis of resistance and the people and government of Syria, and regretted that radical Takfiri Muftis fan the flames of civil war and sectarian conflicts in Syria.
