A school management has threatened to expel a four year-old student Fatima Beevi for wearing hijab (scarf covering the head) in a school of Assam.
The incident took place at Kristo Jyoti School, Bokakhat in Assam’s Golaghat district.
The problem started after four months of Fatima’s admission in the school as class teacher in her calendar book wrote, addressing her parents, “You have given in writing that you would abide by the rule and regulation of the school.
Parents and students are expected to honour their commitment. Please see the rule on school uniform.” The class teacher wrote this in reference to hijab that Fatima wore.
Parents insisted on allowing their girl to wear hijab, which, they claimed does not deform the school uniform code.
But when she disobeyed the authority, principal Father Jose Vargsees served a notice to the parents on March 28 to remove the hijab within 15 days or not to come to school.
Following the alleged warning of the principal, now the parent of the student has knocked the door of Gauahti High Court seeking justice to follow their tradition.
Alee Ahmed, the mother of Fatima told this newspaper, “We were shocked at the behaviour of the school authority. They have serious problem with my daughter wearing a piece of cloth around her head. It doesn’t violate the uniform code of the school. So, we have no other option but to seek justice through the court.”
