In an address to the World Conference of Ulama (scholars) and Islamic Awakening in Tehran on Monday, Imam Khamenei rejected the idea that the uprising in Bahrain is a matter of Shia-Sunni conflict as hegemonic powers want it to appear.
“In Bahrain, the oppressed majority - who have been deprived of the right to vote as well as other fundamental rights that a nation should enjoy - have risen up to demand their rights. Should this be considered a Shia-Sunni conflict simply because the oppressed majority are Shia and the oppressive secular government pretends to be Sunni? Of course, the European and American colonialists and their friends in the region want to make things appear like this, but what is the truth?” the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution said in his address.
In reaction to these enlightening statements, Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa has resorted to projection instead of admitting the truth and in un-diplomatic remarks has said that Imam Khamenei’s statements at the international conference in Tehran “represent an affront to the protocol governing inter-state relations” (!)
He has also questioned the Islamic Republic of Iran’s stance vis-à-vis the oppression of Bahrain’s people.
Khalid has failed to realize that non-interference in other countries’ affairs is a principle of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s foreign policy and that the Supreme Leader’s statements have aimed to inform the world public opinion about the situation of Bahraini people, who are mostly Shia.
He has failed to recognize that Imam Khamenei in his speech at the Ulama and Islamic Awakening Conference called on Muslim scholars to feel responsible about the oppressed people of Bahrain.
Khalid has tried to sweep under the carpet the evidence of Bahraini regime’s policy of oppression and crackdown on the country’s people and cover up the regime’s crimes.
It is time that the ruling regime in Bahrain accept the truth, fulfill the Bahraini nation’s legitimate demands for freedom and grant the nation their rights.
The regime will get nowhere by attempting to cover up the truth and continue to oppress the people of Bahrain who are only pursuing their fundamental rights peacefully.
