Accoridng to Al-Fayha satellite network, the joint event took place at Nasb-ul-Shahid Square at the request of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maleki.
It was aimed at opposing violence and condemning the moves to spread sectarian sedition in the country.
Heads of Iraq’s Shia and Sunni Awqaf departments delivered sermons before the Friday prayers and called on all sects to fight terrorism, maintain national unit and strive to put an end to the clashes created among Muslims by the enemies.
Sheikh Ahmed Al-Samerae, head of the Sunni Awqaf Department, in his sermon said the Iraqi nation needs to maintain solidarity and stay away from division.
He urged all politicians, religious figures and the media to avoid making statements that provoke tension.
Sayyed Saleh Heydari, head of the Shia Awqaf Department, in his sermon underlined that the enemies could not separate Shia and Sunni Muslims from each other as long as they stand united.
