Speaking to IQNA, Samba Sisa said many of the contestants in international recitation and memorization competitions live in non-Islamic countries and have no access to Quran education centers.
He said their level of Tajweed and recitation is usually very low because they have no access to proficient teachers.
“Thus, holding Quranic courses for them during their participation in international event can be very helpful for them although the time or that is usually very short. It can be an opportunity for them to learn the key principles of Tajweed and recitation.”
The Senegalese Quran activist who lives in France said these courses can be held before or after the contest for groups of contestants from non-Islamic countries that speak the same language.
He noted that there are many problems in the way of Quranic education in European countries. “In France, for example, Muslim groups have established numerous Quranic centers and institutes to teach religious sciences or Arabic language. However, most of those teaching in these centers are just graduates of Islamic universities and do not have sufficient mastery over Quran recitation.
He said there is need for Quran reciters with high levels of proficiency to teach Quranic courses in European countries in order to attract the youth to the Quran.
Samba Sisa added that Muslim youths in Europe are assets that can be trained to promote Islamic and Quranic teachings.
Asked about selection of jury members in international Quran competitions, he said that as much as possible, jurors should be from countries other than the host nation so as to prevent worries about siding with the host country’s contenders.
“Moreover, the jury panel should comprise of Quran masters from different countries, European, African, Asian, etc, so that fairness in judgments is guaranteed.”
He stated that another problem for Quran activists in European countries is lack of prominent Quran masters for judging in international Quran competitions.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Samba Sisa highlighted the role of Quran contests in promoting solidarity among Muslims and said these Quranic events are a blessing at a time when the enemies of Islam are plotting to spread Fitna (sedition) and disunity among Muslims.
“These competitions should be used as venues and opportunities to enhance Islamic unity, he underscored.
It should be noted that the Minar Sabil Quran Institute was launched in Senegal in 2003 and opened its branch in France in 2006. It is active in holding Quran recitation and memorization courses as well as charity affairs.
