Sunni Muslims joined their Shia brothers at the holy mausoleum of Imam Hussein (AS) in Karbala to hold Friday prayers yesterday, June 21.
Sayyed Ahmed Al-Safi, representative of Shia source of emulation Grand Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Sistani, led the joint Friday prayers in the holy city, Buratha news agency reported.
Addressing the worshippers, Al-Safi warned that different viewpoints must not turn into bloody sectarian clashes, stressing that sectarianism should be uprooted.
He urged that all Iraqis must stand up against sectarian tensions that benefit no one in the country.
In the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, too, Sunni and Shia Muslims held joint Friday prayers at Um Al-Taboul Mosque. Head of the Sunni Board of Fatwas Sheikh Mahdi Al-Samidaei led the prayers in Baghdad.
Recently, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maleki had called for joint Shia-Sunni Friday prayers as a show of solidarity among Muslims and a move to foil enemy attempts to sow discord in the country.
