The warning comes in the aftermath of intensified tension and the recent spread of street protests in Egypt and clashes between opponents and supporters of the country’s President Mohamed Morsi, Lebanese daily Al-Mustaqbil reported.
Hassan Al-Shafei, a senior adviser to Al-Azhar’s Sheikh has issued a statement, saying “We should be vigilant not to get dragged into a civil war, a war in which there will be no difference between an opposition and an adversary and if that happens, there will be no use for regrets.”
Al-Azhar in this statement condemned the street clashes in Egypt in which a number of youth were killed or wounded.
It called on the opponents of Morsi to accept the call for dialogue instead of continuing the protests. “Dialogue is a new opportunity which should be valued instead of insisting on confrontation,” Al-Shafei said.
According to reports, 7 people, including an American national, have been killed in clashes between Morsi’s supporters and opponents. 300 individuals have also been wounded, five of them critically.
