Speaking at a session at the Rahyaftegan Section of the 21st International Holy Quran Exhibition on Monday night, July 22, Hafiz Muhammad Saeed said he studied a lot about Shia Islam before embracing it.
“I was born in the city of Kano in Nigeria,” he said, noting that Nigeria is a country where Muslims live in the northern part and Christians in the southern part.
Hafiz, whose father is a scholar in Maliki school of Islam, said in his studies he came across the word Infallible Imams (AS) but did not know how it was related to Shi’ism.
It was only after studying about the issue that learned Shia Muslims are the devotees and followers of Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS).
Hafiz said before conversion, he had many questions on his mind about Shia Islam and in order to find answers to them, he went to Iranian and Lebanese institutes in his country.
“Later on, I met a Lebanese Shia who helped me a lot on my path toward knowing Shia Islam.”
He said after embracing the religion he came to Iran to have a better understanding of Shi’ism.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the Nigerian Shia said Nigeria has a population of 170 million, 60 percent of which is Muslim.
He noted that there are 80 million Sunni Muslims in the country as well as 6 million Shi’ites.
Hafiz referred to the Wahabis as the main obstacle for promoting Shia Islam in Nigeria and said a Wahabi group called “Jama’at Al-Tajdid Al-Islami” made several attempts to kill him for his conversion.
The Nigerian convert, who is studying for a PhD in Islamic philosophy, went on to say that he has chosen the field to be able to answer questions about Islam when he returns to his country.
