Sayyed Mahmoud Al-Mousawi, a researcher with Lebanon’s Hezbollah resistance movement, made the remark in an interview with IQNA, adding that the goal behind these attempts is to weaken the axis of resistance and serve the interests of the Zionist regime.
He said in case of an attack on Syria, the US would use countries like Jordan, Cyprus and Persian Gulf states and therefore Damascus would react by targeting US interests in these countries.
Al-Mousawi said the war against Syria has been planned long ago and that it was supposed to be launched right after the invasion of Iraq.
“The invasion of Iraq lasted only 20 days and Collin Powel, the then US secretary of state, told Bashar Al-Assad that after the Iraqi war it would be Syria’s turn. Syria had prepared itself for an attack but it was postponed for some reason.”
He said the reason was the Zionist regime’s aggressions against Lebanon and Gaza as the Americans expected Israel to defeat the resistance movement in the two wars but it failed.
According to Al-Mousawi the Americans began the 33-day war hoping that they would defeat Hezbollah in three days but the war lasted for 33 days and they gained no victory.
He said Syria is very important as it serves as a bridge between Iran and Hezbollah and once this connection is cut, Western powers will heave a sigh of relief.
The Lebanese researcher noted that the Zionist regime is also involved in the onslaught against Syria, saying that after failing to defeat the resistance movements in Lebanon and Gaza, the regime took on Syria that is a supporter of the resistance.
He further pointed to the concurrence of the Syrian crisis with the Islamic Awakening uprisings in the region, saying that as the tide of Islamic Awakening swept the region, the enemies created a crisis in Syria using radical and extremist clerics from countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.
As for Hezbollah’s support for Syria, he said there are 40 villages inside Syria whose people are Lebanese and it was the duty of the Lebanese government to support these people who go to Lebanon to vote when there is an election in the country.
He said when the government of Lebanon failed to fulfill its duty and defend them, the youths of these villages came to Hezbollah for support.
According to Al-Mousawi, Hezbollah’s first step was providing relief aid and training the youth to defend themselves and their families.
He noted that after some time, some Christian villages also sent letter to Hezbollah asking for training and support from the group.
Al-Mousawi added that the Al-Nusra Front that was provoked by radical Fatwas started to desecrate and destroy Shia shrines and that prompted Hezbollah to defend the shrines.
He further underlined that the US has come to the region in support of Israel but if it makes the mistake of attacking Syria, Israel would be targeted by Damascus.
Asked about Takfiri groups in Syria, Al-Mousawi said these groups are radical anti-Shia elements who think they would enter paradise by killing Shias.
He said members of Al-Nusra extremist front are from different countries like Libya, Egypt, Morocco, Sudan, France, Chad, Burkina Faso, Norway, Algeria, Tunisia, the Netherlands, and Somalia.
He went on to say that the Al-Nusra Front seeks to establish a radical government like the Taliban in Syria.
