Secretary of the Zakat Committee said Zakat revenues have been used to build more than 5500 mosques in villages across the country.
Hossein Nabilu told IQNA that the committee has collected 4000 billion rials of Zakat in the country during the past 7 years.
Zakat (alms-giving) is the practice of charitable giving by Muslims based on accumulated wealth, and is obligatory for all who are able to do so.
Nabilu said 2500 billion rials of the collected Zakat was spent for helping the needy and the rest was allocated for constructing mosques.
He also noted that mosques played a major role in helping to collect the Zakat revenues and promoting the culture of alms-giving.
The official also noted that the Zakat revenues collected this year show a 100-percent growth compared to the previous year.
