Solidarity among Shia-Sunni Scholars Necessary for Fighting Terrorism in Iraq

It is necessary for Shia and Sunni scholars in Iraq to uphold solidarity and cooperate to fight terrorism and violence in the country.
Adel Abdul Mahdi, a senior member of Iraq’s Supreme Islamic Council made the remark, urging scholars from both schools of thought to work together to confront terrorism, Buratha news agency reported.
“How much blood should be spilled in Iraq until everybody comes to realize that there is no other way than peaceful coexistence and confronting terrorism and violence?” he said.
Adel Abdul Mahdi underlined that without cooperation from both Shia and Sunni scholars and followers, terrorism cannot be defeated in the country.
He added that events in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iraq, Somalia, Chad, Mali and other countries have proved that the objective of terrorism to foment discord among Muslims.
Violence has surged across Iraq in recent months, reaching its highest level since 2008.
According to the United Nations, more than 800 people were killed across Iraq in various acts of terrorism in August alone.
UN figures also say that over 4,000 people have died in terrorist attacks in Iraq so far in 2013, with Baghdad province hit worst.
The Iraqi government says al-Qaeda-linked groups and members of the outlawed Ba’ath party are behind the surge in terrorist attacks in the country.
