Shias, Sunnis Hold Joint Congregational Friday Prayer in Basra

TEHRAN (IQNA) - Iraqi Shia and Sunni Muslims in Basra held a joint congregational Friday Prayer on January 9.


According to Alsumaria website, the prayer was held at Martyr Yusuf Al-Hisan Mosque, which is the Grand Mosque in Basra.

Condemning activities aimed at fomenting divisions and disunity in the Islamic society was the main objective of the joint congregational prayer.

It was attended by eminent religious and political figures of the country who stressed the importance of taking common stances against terrorism and supporting religious minorities.

Mohsin Hamid, head of the Political Council in Basra said that Iraqis condemn violence and extremism adding that the prayer aimed to strengthen unity and solidarity among the people.

Sheikh Mohammed Al-Jubouri, director of the Sunni Endowment Diwan in southern Iraq, also noted that the message of the prayer was the unity of Basra citizens against extremism and terrorism.
