TEHRAN (IQNA) – A new document leaked from Saudi Arabia’s health ministry shows that as many as 7477 pilgrims were killed in last month’s crush of people in Mina, near Makkah, during the Hajj rituals.

According to the document, 1528 of the victims of the incident are Saudi nationals and the rest are from other countries.

This is while Saudi officials insist their official figure of 769 killed and 934 injured remains accurate, though an investigation into the causes of the tragedy is ongoing and authorities have not updated the casualty toll since September 26, two days after the disaster.

The tragic incident occurred on September 24 when two large crowds of pilgrims were directed to move toward each other from opposite directions in Mina.

At least 465 Iranians are among the Hajj pilgrims who lost their lives in the tragedy.

The Mina crush and a number of other recent deadly incidents during Hajj rites have reignited the debate on Riyadh’s competence to manage the annual Islamic pilgrimage.

On September 11, a crane collapsed at the Grand Mosque of Makkah, killing over 100 people. Hundreds of people were also injured. According to the figures released by Iran’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization, 11 Iranian pilgrims were among the deceased and 32 of the injured were also Iranian nationals.
