Ali Larijani made the remark during a visit to the house of Ayatollah Moayyedi Qomi, a prominent Quran scholar who lost his life in the tragic incident.
He said that many countries are still unaware of the true dimensions of the disaster.
Larijani stressed that Saudi Arabia had an unreasonable conduct in this tragedy and is to blame for the incident.
“The Saudi government could have managed the incident in a way so as to reduce the number of victims significantly,” he stated.
The Iranian parliamentarian also criticized the Riyadh government for its attempts to cover up the true scale of the disaster, saying that while the Saudis insisted the number of victims stood at around 700, it is now known to be more than 7000.
Latest figures show that more than 7500 people from different countries, including 464 from Iran, were killed in thea crush of pilgrims in Mina, near Makkah, on September 24 while performing the Hajj rituals.
The incident that marked the worst ever Hajj disaster came nearly two weeks after tens of Hajj pilgrims were killed in another tragic incident in Makkah.
On September 11, a massive construction crane crashed into Mecca’s Grand Mosque in stormy weather, killing at least 107 people, including 11 Iranians, and injuring 201 others.
Saudi authorities have come under fire for their inability to ensure the safety of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims who converge on Mecca every year.
