Speaking to IQNA, Mohammed Tayfur Sunmaz said the Egyptian master recited the Quran so beautifully that he would only stop thinking about anything else and listen to the recitation.
That inspiring voice was what led me to the path of learning Quran recitation and becoming a Qari, he said.
Abdul Basit (1927–1988) was a renowned Egyptian Qari and the first president of the Reciters' Union in the Arab country.
Sunmaz, born in 1986 in Turkey’s Hatay province, has won a number of titles in national and international Quran contests.
His best title is a top rank in Croatia international Quran competition in 2011.
He underlined the importance of Quranic activities, especially holding international Quran contests, saying that they promote peace and unity among Muslims.
Sunmaz noted that Iran is one of the Muslim countries where great importance is attached to Quranic activities.
He went on to say that the Islamic Republic of Iran has emerged more successful in terms of Quranic activities than Turkey.
