He first recited the Adhan (call to prayers) at the mosque when he was just seven years old.
"I was raised in a Quranic family,” he said in an interview with al-Yawm al-Sabi website.
"My father Sheikh Ibrahim was a famous Qari and Ibtihal reciter and my grandfather was the muezzin of Sayyidah Zaynab Mosque in 1918. I started going to the mosque since early childhood.”
Hussein said that at the age of ten, he started memorizing the Quran with the help of his father, who was a Quran teacher.
The first time he recited the Adhan was at 7. "That day, the muezzin had not arrived at the mosque on time and someone asked me to recite the call to prayers. Since then, I would recite the Adhan on different occasions.”
It was a good opportunity for young Hussein because it drew applause from people who encouraged him to learn Quran recitation as well.
"In 1986, I was selected as the (official) Qari and muezzin of Sayyidah Zaynab Mosque, a position previously held by prominent Qaris like Sheikh Abul Ainian Shuaisha, Sheikh Abdul Fattah al-Sha’ashaei, and Sheikh Ahmed Muhamad Amer.”
Hussein entered Egypt’s state TV as a Qari and Ibtihal reciter in 2012 and later joined the center for Quran recitation.
He is also a member of the administrative council of Egypt’s Union of Quran Reciters.
He has four sons all of whom are memorizers of the entire Quran.
His eldest son, aged 22, is also a Quran reciter.
