TEHRAN (IQNA) – Mosques in Catalonia, Spain, are to remain outside the independence 'process' and must not be used as polling stations for the unilateral referendum announced by the regional government on October 1.

Spanish Islamic Commission Says Mosques Should Remain Outside Independence Process

Spanish Islamic Commission President Riay Tatary made the remark speaking to El Mundo, adding that the aim is to "prevent places of worship from being used for political purposes.”

Tatary represents the country's Muslim communities to the public administration.

Mosques were used as polling stations for the symbolic independence referendum of November 9, 2014, in which 2 million people turned out to vote.

Last May the Islamic commission cancelled a conference titled 'Catalonia, land of immigrants' organized by the Catalan National Assembly and the Islamic community Al Farkum promoting Muslim collaboration in the "foundation of a new State”.

"We will all be founders of a new State in which we will enjoy the same rights, opportunities and responsibilities,” read the program in Arabic.

"Politics must stay away from the mosques,” Tatary said.
