TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) will organize more than 400 programs to commemorate its deputy head, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, and Lt. General Qassem Soleimani on the anniversary of their martyrdom.

Muhnad al-Aqabi, director general of the PMU’s information dissemination department, said the programs will be organized in different parts of the Arab country.

He said they include a ceremony that will begin today with a rally from the martyrs’ memorial monument to the Tahrir Square in Baghdad, Shafaqna reported.

He added that there will be a similar event on January 1 to condemn the assassination of the resistance figures.

There will also be a ceremony attended by poets and artists to be held at the PMU information dissemination department.

In addition to commemorating the martyrs, the ceremonies will be held to renew allegiance with the commanders of victory and condemn their assassination, al-Aqabi stated.

He also called on the Iraqi government to declare the martyrdom anniversary of Gen. Soleimani and al-Muhandis as a national holiday in honor of their role in defeating the (Daesh) terrorism that had targeted Iraq.

Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), and his Iraqi trenchmate Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy head of the Popular Mobilization Units, were assassinated along with their companions in a US terror drone strike authorized by Trump near Baghdad International Airport on January 3.

Both commanders were admired by Muslim nations for their role in eliminating the US-sponsored Daesh Takfiri terrorist group in the region, particularly in Iraq and Syria.

The US assassination drew a wave of condemnation from officials and movements throughout the world, and triggered huge public protests across the region.
