TEHRAN (IQNA) – Indian forces have demolished a number of homes belonging to Muslims in response to Friday protests that demanded the arrest of BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.

Officials of the Prayagraj district demolished the two-story house of Javed Mohd, a Muslim activist and a member of Welfare Party of India who has been arrested by Indian forces following demonstrations that erupted on Friday against insulting comments made by the now-suspended BJP spokesperson.

The Indian authorities demolished the house using bulldozers under the excuse that it had been constructed “illegally”, according to IQNA's reporter in Kashmir.

This is while Mohd’s daughter Somaiya Fatima told reporters on Sunday that the family had earlier received no warning. “No one spoke to us about this earlier. If our property was truly illegal, then why did they not come and give us these notices earlier?” Indian media outlets quoted her as saying.

The demolishing comes just a day after the houses of two other accused activists were demolished in Kanpur and Saharanpur districts.

The Indian authorities usually respond to any protest of the Muslim community by razing their properties.

Protests erupted in different districts of India on Friday to condemn Sharma’s remarks who had insulted Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The insult has been widely condemned by Muslims inside and outside India as some countries demanded an official apology from the ruling BJP government. In response, the BJP suspended Sharma and expelled another spokesman Naveen Jindal, claiming that what the two spokespersons have said does not reflect the views of the Indian government.
