“One of the important areas of cooperation between Iran and Malaysia and other Islamic countries is the field of Quran memorization and recitation competitions,” Iranian ambassador to Malaysia Ali Asghar Mohammadi told IQNA on Wednesday on the sideline of the opening ceremony of the 62nd international Quran competition in Kuala Lumpur.
Islamic countries are in need of increased “Quranic diplomacy”, he highlighted.
Pointing to the capacity of cooperation between Iran and Malaysia in this field, the envoy said, “I hope that we can draw new plans in the field of joint Quranic activities with Malaysia after the covid-19 pandemic.”
He further lauded the organization of competitions in Kuala Lumpur, noting that Malaysia is using long years of experience in staging Quran competitions and constantly improving the quality of the event.
Officially known as Malaysia International Al-Quran Recital and Memorization Assembly (MTHQA), the competition kicked off on Wednesday night at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC).
The opening ceremony was attended by men and women contestants, Malaysian officials, diplomatic missions of some Islamic countries, and hundreds of Malaysian people at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC).
The contest is set to wrap up on October 25 when the top winners will be announced.
The 62nd MTHQA was held online in the preliminary stage. The finals is organized in person, after more than two years of hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to officials, 41 individuals from 31 countries are set to participate in the final round in two categories of men and women.
