TEHRAN (IQNA) – A Bahraini qari who won the male category of 62nd Malaysia’s international Quran competition says he was eyeing the title.

“I had predicted that I would be among the top ranks because I knew I had the best performance,” Mohamed Sameer Mohamed Magahed told IQNA.

The closing ceremony of the Malaysian contest, officially known as the International Al-Quran Recitation and Memorisation Assembly (MTHQA), was held on Monday night in Kuala Lumpur.

The 31-year-old Bahraini qari, who is a dentist, said he had participated in some eight international Quran competitions across the world, including in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Kuwait, and Russia, winning several awards.

“This is the first time that I participate in the Malaysian competition,” he said, appreciating the efforts of the organizers of the event.

Asked about the rules of this competition, Magahed said one of the challenges of this contest is that the organizers will tell the qari the starting verse and the qari should immediately find the required tone and meaning. “Therefore it depends on the chance of qari that which verse will be determined and it is probable that the meaning would be completed after two or three verses,” he said.

He also said members of the panel of arbiters were renowned experts who are known to the Quranic community across the world.

The final round of the 62nd edition of Malaysia’s international Holy Quran competition kicked off at the KLCC on Wednesday.
