
The ceremony was attended by winners as well Egyptian officials including Awqaf Minister Mohamed Mukhtar Gomaa.
Addressing the event, Gomaa said the difference between this year’s edition compared to previous ones was that the scores of contestants were very close.
All participants are winners, he said, calling for constant efforts to preserve and memorize the Holy Quran.
A total of 108 Quran memorizers and reciters from 58 countries, including 33 African countries attended the international event.
Named after the late qari Sheikh Mustafa Ismail, it started in the Egyptian capital on Saturday, February 4.
Seven Quran experts from Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Chad and Oman were the members of the panel of arbiters.
Maher Mohammad Abdul Nabi Farmawi fom Egypt and Abdullah Izzedin Abdul Rahman came first and second in the first category, which is the memorization of the Quran and understanding of its concepts for men and women under 45 years old. The winner and runner-up will receive 250,000 and 150,000 Egyptian Pounds respectively.
There were seven other categories and Egyptians managed to collect most of the top places.
