TEHRAN (IQNA) – A Friday prayer leader of Beirut stressed the need to avoid allowing political differences to turn into religious and sectarian discord.

Sayyed Ali Fadlallah

Sayyed Ali Fadlallah made the remark in an address to the 37thInternational Islamic Unity Conference here in Tehran, adding that Muslims should make unity a priority in their life.

He said the Holy Prophet (PBUH) sought strengthening unity among Muslims.

He hailed the conference as a venue for discussing different issues and exploring ways for deepening Muslim unity and proximity.

The Lebanese cleric also said that reducing tensions and removing obstacles on the path of Islamic unity is necessary.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Fadlallah warned against insulting the sanctities of others and said the enemy uses social media to foment discord among Muslims through such ways.

He also highlighted the importance of raising awareness and promoting a correct understanding of the religion in the Muslim Ummah.

The 37th International Islamic Unity Conference, which is held both in-person and online, was inaugurated with the recitation of some verses from the Holy Quran at Tehran's Summit Hall on Saturday.

More than 200 Iranian and foreign intellectuals and religious figures from various Muslim countries are participating in the conference, which is organized by the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought. The event will conclude on October 3.

The online section of the conference started on Thursday, September 28.

The 17th day of Rabi al-Awwal, which falls on October 3 this year, is believed by Shia Muslims to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), while Sunni Muslims regard the 12th day of the month (September 28) as the birthday of the last prophet.

The interval between the two dates is celebrated every year as the Islamic Unity Week.

Late Founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran Imam Khomeini (RA) declared the occasion the Islamic Unity Week back in the 1980s.
