TEHRAN (IQNA) – One of the Palestinians released as part of a prisoner swap deal between Hamas and Israel said that defending Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam, is an "honor".

Fatima Amarneh, who was arrested about two months ago for an alleged "attempted stabbing" near Al-Aqsa Mosque and beaten by Israeli security forces, spoke to the media on Friday after arriving at her family's home in Ya'bad town near Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank.

"Israel imposed additional restrictions on female inmates after October 7," Amarneh said. "Israel took everything from women inmates despite they were already lacking food, blankets, clothes, and most of all freedom."

"Despite my arrest, preserving and defending Al-Aqsa Mosque is an honor, as it is the cornerstone of a Muslim's life," she added.

Amarneh was one of the 39 Palestinians freed from Israeli jails on Friday, the first day of a humanitarian pause, in exchange for 24 Israelis and foreigners held by Hamas. The prisoner swap deal, mediated by Qatar and Egypt, is expected to continue for four more days.

The truce comes after nearly 50 days of brutal Israeli attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip that killed at least 14,854 Palestinians, including 6,150 children and over 4,000 women.

The relentless bombing campaign started after Palestinian resistance groups led by Hamas launched an unprecedented large-scale operation in the occupied territories on October 7 in response to decades of Israeli violence and oppression. The attacks killed around 1,200 Israeli soldiers and settlers.
