The MCD on Tuesday attempted to demolish the wall, claiming it was unauthorized
However, people gathered at the site in protest, forcing the civic body to halt the demolition drive.
The MCD had initiated the anti-encroachment drive amid heavy security deployment. "This initiative was part of our ongoing efforts to address unauthorized religious encroachments and uphold the integrity of public spaces," it said.
In a statement, the MCD said that it has succeeded in removing 20 metres of the “unauthorized” wall in Municipal Park in Mangolpuri in Ward No 42 of Rohini Zone.
However, the situation soon escalated due to the presence of several protestors, who had formed a human chain around the structure.
"Additionally, the presence of female protesters sitting on the unauthorised structure complicated the law and order situation," the MCD said.
It said that despite efforts, the authorities were unable to safely disperse the crowd, following which the demolition was halted "to maintain peace and order", following a request from the police.
