IQNA – A member of the political bureau of the Palestinian resistance movement highlighted how the movement’s martyred leader Yahya Sinwar held memorizers of the Quran in high esteem.

Kamal Abu Awn said Sinwar, who was martyred last month, paid a lot of respect to Quran memorizers and likened them to the fighters of Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, Al Jazeera reported.

“I would always meet with Abu Ibrahim (Yahya Sinwar),” he said adding that before being a great leader, he was a true believer because had been raised in mosques and Quran sessions.

He said Sinwar was keen to promote Quran memorization among Hamas members and others.

Once he donated $400,000 to Hamas, earmarking half it for Al-Qassam and the other half for the Dar-Quran Center, Abu Awn said.

That is one reason why most of the fighters (of Hamas) you see in the battlefield today are memorizers of the Holy Book, he stated.

Born in a refugee camp in Khan Yunis, Gaza Strip, in 1962, Yahya Sinwar was a Palestinian resistance fighter, author, and translator.

A graduate of Arabic studies from the Islamic University of Gaza, he was jailed by the Israeli regime several times since 1982.
