Responding to recent regional diplomatic moves, particularly Egypt’s reported proposal to Hamas to lay down its arms, Al-Khalili took to X.
“The aggression of the Zionist regime against Gaza and all occupied Palestinian territories continues without pause or restraint—showing no respect even for hospitals or any other sanctuaries,” he wrote.
Al-Khalili expressed particular concern over the contradiction in the requests being made to the Palestinian factions. “It is one of the strangest contradictions that those who possess the right are being called upon to surrender their weapons to the occupier—and even stranger that such a call comes from their fellow Arab brothers,” he said.

His comments appear to directly address reports that Egypt, acting as a mediator in ceasefire negotiations, has included disarmament of Palestinian resistance factions—particularly Hamas—as part of a proposal to end hostilities. The move has been met with rejection from Hamas, which declared its weapons to be a “red line” and non-negotiable.
Al-Khalili warned that these demands, reportedly echoing Israeli positions, effectively work to undermine the Palestinian cause. “These requests only serve to entrench the occupation, escalate the aggression, and weaken those who stand for truth,” he said.
The Mufti stressed that the attacks on Gaza continue unabated. “The Zionist regime’s aggression against the defenseless Muslim people of Gaza, and across all occupied Palestinian territories, persists. It shows no regard even for medical centers, relief facilities, or places of worship,” he said.
