First-Ever One-Day Khatm Quran Competition Held in Damascus

IQNA – Syria’s Ministry of Religious Endowments (Awqaf) has organized the country’s first competition for completing a full Quran recitation in a single day, drawing hundreds of male and female memorizers to three major mosques in the capital.

First-Ever One-Day Khatm Quran Competition Held in Damascus

 

The event took place across the Umayyad Mosque, Al-Hamza Mosque, and Al-Abbas Mosque in Damascus, with Quran memorizers competing to complete the entire Quran from memory in a single session, between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m.

According to Mohammad Joweid, Director of Quranic Affairs at the Ministry of Awqaf, the goal of the competition was to “promote Quranic culture and revive the role of mosques as centers of worship and education.”

“A total of 163 men and around 500 women between the ages of 12 and 35 registered to take part, following a special qualification test,” he added.

Abdul Qader Barakat, head of Quranic Affairs in Damascus, emphasized the uniqueness of the event, stating: “This was Syria’s first-ever competition to complete the entire Quran in one sitting, and thanks to God, it was successfully held.” He noted the strong turnout by women at Al-Hamza and Al-Abbas mosques.

Sheikh Mahmoud Al-Ahmad Bek, Director of Quranic Affairs in the Rif Damascus region, confirmed that 50 male and 80 female Quran memorizers participated.

He added that the initiative is expected to grow and expand in future editions.
