Mecca: Project to Add Major Prayer and Urban Spaces Near Grand Mosque

IQNA – The King Salman Gate project, a large mixed-use development planned next to Mecca’s Grand Mosque, will create around 900,000 indoor and outdoor prayer spaces, according to the company overseeing the initiative.

RUA AlHaram AlMakki Company said the development will cover about 12 million square metres and aims to improve access to the Grand Mosque. Details on cost and completion date were not disclosed.

The project is designed to redevelop the surrounding urban area and integrate public transportation links. According to the Saudi Press Agency, it will “contribute to enhancing access to the Grand Mosque and elevating service quality.”

In addition to prayer areas, the site will include residential, hospitality, commercial and cultural facilities.

Plans also involve restoring approximately 19,000 square metres of heritage sites to help preserve Mecca’s cultural and historical identity.

The project is expected to support economic goals under Saudi Vision 2030, with projections of more than 300,000 jobs to be generated by 2036.
