IQNA – A man has been arrested after entering a South Carolina mosque during prayer while carrying an AR-15 rifle, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident took place at a mosque in Columbia on Nov. 9. Deputies said the man entered the building during afternoon worship and interacted with children while displaying the weapon. Surveillance footage later confirmed the sequence of events, authorities noted.

Investigators released an image of the suspect on Wednesday. Officials said that 29-year-old Adam White appeared at the sheriff’s department the next morning and identified himself as the person in the photo.

He was taken into custody shortly afterward.

White faces several charges, including disturbing a place of worship, aggravated breach of peace, and pointing and presenting a firearm. He was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.

The arrest comes at a time when Muslim institutions in the United States have reported heightened security concerns. National civil-rights organizations have documented a rise in threats, vandalism and harassment directed at mosques and Islamic centers in recent years.

According to the most recent reports by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, these incidents include armed intimidation, arson attempts and property damage across multiple states.
