It emphasized that he was one of the most famous reciters of the Quran in the Islamic world who was the owner of a “golden throat” in recitation and traveled to the East and West of the world as an ambassador of the Book of God.

Major parts of Abdul Basit’s life were reviewed in Al-Azhar’s Facebook post, noting that he was born in January 1927 in the village of Al-Mara’za, a suburb of the city of Armant in Qena province. He died on November 30, 1988.

It said Abdul Basit received numerous invitations from all over the world to recite the Quran at various events. “He accepted these invitations and traveled extensively, visiting countries including Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Syria, Kuwait, Iraq, Morocco, Lebanon, Algeria, Indonesia, South Africa, America, France, India and other countries.”

He recited the Quran in the Two Holy Mosques in Mecca and Medina, for which he was nicknamed “The Voice of Mecca”, it said, adding that he also recited in Al-Aqsa Mosque in Al-Quds and the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus.
