Astan of Hazrat Abbas Holy Shrine Completes Restoration of Rare Quran Copy

IQNA – The Department of Intellectual and Cultural Affairs of the Astan (custodianship) of Hazrat Abbas (AS) holy shrine in Karbala, Iraq, has completed the restoration of a rare and exquisite copy of the Holy Quran.

The Al-Fadl Center for the Preservation and Conservation of Manuscript Heritage and Document Archiving in the Library of the Astan, affiliated with the Department of Intellectual and Cultural Affairs, carried out the restoration and supervision of this work in compliance with the scientific and technical standards set for the preservation and conservation of manuscripts.

Laith Lutfi, the director of this center, said the center's staff has completed the restoration of the copy, which is considered one of the rarest manuscripts kept in the historical collection of the Treasury of the Kadhimiya Shrine.

He added that the restoration process went through several specialized stages, including documenting the manuscript’s photographs and writings, sorting its pages based on a numerical sequence pattern, conducting the necessary biological and chemical tests to determine its condition, and developing appropriate preservation methods.

Lutfi explained that the specialized team carried out a series of meticulous technical measures, including mechanical cleaning, replacing missing and damaged parts, stitching and binding, along with other technical methods that helped restore the manuscript and preserve its heritage and scientific value.

He emphasized that restoration helps extend the lifespan of rare manuscripts, protects them from damage, and ensures their scientific and historical value for future generations.
