Large Number of Pilgrims Visit Karbala Shrine for Ashura Mourning Rituals

IQNA – The holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) in Karbala, Iraq, was full of pilgrims Thursday night, which marked the eve of Ashura in the Arab country.

A large number of pilgrims from inside and outside Iraq have traveled to the holy city of Karbala to participate in mourning ceremonies marking the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS).

The lunar Hijri month of Muharram began on June 17 in Iraq this year, a day later than in Iran, and therefore, the day of Ashura falls on June 26, in the Arab country.

Many mourning groups are present at the holy shrines of Imam Hussein (AS) and Hazrat Abbas (AS) in Karbala to mourn and perform special rituals that are common in Iraq.

The 10th of Muharram, also known as Ashura, is a significant day for Muslims around the world. It marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions in the 680 AD Battle of Karbala.

The sacrifice made by Imam Hussein (AS) is remembered and mourned by Shia Muslims worldwide.
